Hair colouring's face a constant battle from our surroundings to stay looking their best - there is constant bombardment from UV Rays, every shower you take causes the colour to resolubilise bit by bit - even if you were to shower without a hair product and just water it would still have a gradual effect on the hair colour. It's also worth noting the cooler the temperature of the water you wash the hair with the better. Heat application from styling tools is another factor, be it straightening, blow drying, curling, etc., the direct application of heat to your hair will always cause colour degradation if sufficient heat protection isn't used. Chlorine from swimming pools when you go for a dip - the list goes on and on.
Also bear in mind that insufficient processing time can also cause the colour to fade easily, for example those with grey hair should take a little longer to allow the product to sink in on application as grey hair cuticles are more tightly packed. Ideally, you should also wait 24 hours after the colour application before having your first shower.
The fight against colour fade
Given all of the factors above are constantly tugging that precious colour away from your hair, the most impactful measure you can take is to use a colour friendly shampoo and conditioner duo (we'd always recommend using both, not just one or the other) and to always use your favourite heat protection spray when using styling tools. Looking out for products with UV protection is always recommended too.
Below we look at some of the best options on the market for you today...
